The Delaware General Health District works to control mosquito-borne diseases in several ways. Mosquito-borne diseases in this area can include LaCrosse Encephalitis and West Nile Virus. Ohio has had a number of cases of both of these diseases in each of the last several years, and both have been detected in Delaware County in recent years. Both of those diseases can be serious, and cause severe neurological difficulties which can persist for years.

DGHD Mosquito Borne Disease Control efforts include Public Education, Abatement of Breeding Pools, Disease Surveillance (including live mosquito trapping), Larviciding, and Fogging to kill adult mosquitoes.

Fogging will be done when a mosquito trap produces positive WNV mosquitoes and then only in the immediate area where the disease was detected. Fogging will not be provided to abate nuisance mosquitoes unless disease is detected. The DGHD will refrain from fogging any homeowner’s property upon the owner’s request.
