Safety
Children today face many challenging health issues. Injury remains the
leading cause of death for all children. Each year in the United States,
one out of every four children ages 14 and under sustains injuries that
require medical attention. Motor vehicles are responsible for one of every
five deaths among children 1–14 years of age in the
United States,
and pedestrian injuries account for one fourth of them. In 1998, 726
child pedestrians were killed, and at least 30, 000 children were
nonfatally injured in traffic, which excludes those struck while in
driveways, parking lots, or other non-traffic areas. Traumatic brain
injury accounts for more than half the fatalities.

Stranger Danger
The Delaware General Health District offers "Stranger
Danger Jeopardy" to every elementary school throughout the Health
District. This Jeopardy-based game teaches children about strangers and
what children can do to avoid strangers when they are alone. Our staff
conducts the game and children are taught how to recognize and avoid
strangers at home, outside, on the internet, and how to determine if
someone is a friend or a stranger. This fun and interactive program allows
children to learn new concepts (such as how to safely surf the internet)
while reminding the children of familiar concepts (not to talk to
strangers, etc.).
