HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus is
the virus responsible for the disease called AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome). The virus is transmitted from person to person through blood
that is infected with the HIV virus. Currently, there is no cure. For people with the virus,
there are a number of medications to slow the progression of the disease.
HIV
testing is important because it leads to early diagnosis and treatment
which can delay progression of the disease. At the Health District anonymous
and confidential HIV testing are offered. Anonymous testing means no name
is required at any point in the process. The nurse tells you the results,
but no written results are given to you. With confidential testing, you
may have a written copy of your results. This means that your name is on
the results. Counseling regarding risk factors and prevention is given
both prior to testing and when test results are provided. Immediate referrals
are offered should a test come back positive. The Health District uses
the OraQuick Advance® oral swab test. No needles and no blood! Same
day results.
