Communities /Safe Kids Coalition
The Delaware General Health District is the lead agency
of the Delaware County Safe Communities/Safe Kids Coalition. The
SC/SK Coalition is composed of local agencies, private organizations,
and concerned citizens who are interested in making Delaware County
the safest it can be. The SC/SK Coalition’s main focus areas include
reducing unintentional childhood injuries and fatalities and reducing
motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities.

What is the difference between Safe Communities and
Safe Kids?
At Coalition events around the county, many Delaware County residents
ask, “What is the difference between Safe Communities and Safe Kids?”
Safe Communities is overseen by the Ohio Department of Public
Safety (ODPS) and focuses on reducing motor vehicle-related injuries
and fatalities in all populations. Some of the programs Delaware
County Safe Communities is involved with include reducing underage
drinking (Prom Promise; Parents Who Host Lose The Most), increasing
seatbelt use (What’s Holding You Back?), and reducing impaired driving
(Drugged and Drunk Driving Awareness Month; You Drink and Drive, You
Lose).
Safe Kids is overseen by Safe Kids Worldwide (based in
Washington, DC) and focuses on reducing unintentional injuries and
fatalities in children under 14. Some of the programming that Delaware
County Safe Kids is involved with include bicycle safety (Cranium
Crusaders), child passenger safety (National Child Passenger Safety
Week; car seat checks), and pedestrian safety (Walk To School
Day/Week).
There is some overlap between the two programs. Safe Communities and
Safe Kids both participate in National Child Passenger Safety Week and
Walk to School Day.
