The WIC program is a supplemental food program for women,
infants, and children. It is a government program administered by the
states. WIC is available in every state and you can transfer to any
county in any state. WIC will provide you with foods from all food
groups and each food is qualified by its nutritional content. For
pregnant, breast feeding, or non breastfeeding women and children, the
program will provide milk, cheese, cereal, juice, eggs, and peanut
butter or beans. WIC
provides
nutrition education, breast feeding support and
milk, eggs, cheese, formula, juices, cereals, peanut butter, dried
peas or beans
at
no cost to eligible participants.
To qualify for the program you must
meet
Federal guidelines, earn a low or moderate income and:
Be a resident of Delaware,
Morrow or Union County
Be Pregnant or Post Partum (up
to 6 months) or Breast- feeding an infant (up to one year of age)
Have an Infant or Child under
the age of five years old
Be in nutritional or medical
need
(As determined by a WIC health professional)
There
are income guidelines that have to be met and they are 185% of poverty
level. Also there is a nutritional risk that must be met. We have a very
large list of risks that we use to put someone on the program. If you
are pregnant and on WIC, the baby automatically qualifies for the program.
If your family receives a Medical card for the person that is to be put
on the program from Job and Family Services, we have to put them on the
program regardless of income.
You are required to provide us with proof of your household income, anything
in the last 30 days, as well as identification for each person that is
to be put on the program. We do ask for social security numbers and immunization
records.
Income Calculations
Income is determined by the gross income per month. Examples of income
proof that can be excepted are check stubs not more than 30 days old at
the time of the appointment, and/or current Medical card, Social Security
award letter, a statement from an employer, or last years Income tax return.
To figure monthly amount from a check stub, multiply the weekly amount
by 4.3 and the bi-weekly amount by 2.15. If a client has a medical card
you can put them on the program regardless of income amount. Only clients
that are eligible for the Medical card, can be considered for WIC, if
over income.
